Noise Control Methods for Air Compressors
Jan 19 , 2026

Noise control of air compressors is mainly implemented through three approaches: silencers, sound-attenuating tunnels and sound insulation technology.

1.Install silencers

The primary noise sources are the air inlet and outlet, where suitable inlet and outlet silencers should be installed. The noise spectrum of air compressor inlets exhibits low-frequency characteristics, so the inlet silencers should adopt a reactive structure or an impedance composite structure dominated by reactive components. Given the high exhaust pressure and airflow velocity of air compressors, small-hole silencers should be installed at the air compressor exhaust ports.

2.Set up sound-attenuating tunnels

A sound-attenuating tunnel is an underground or semi-underground tunnel whose walls are built with bricks with good sound absorption performance. Connect the air inlet pipe of the air compressor to the sound-attenuating tunnel, so that the air enters the compressor through the tunnel. The use of sound-attenuating tunnels can significantly reduce the inlet noise of the air compressor, and their service life is longer than that of ordinary silencers.

3.Install sound insulation enclosures

After installing silencers or setting up sound-attenuating tunnels at the inlet and outlet of the air compressor, the airflow noise can be reduced to below 80 dB(A). However, the mechanical noise and motor noise of the air compressor remain high. Therefore, a sound insulation enclosure should also be installed on the compressor unit.

4.Hang space sound absorbers
